French Imam Arrested for Alleged $200,000 Benefit Fraud and Undeclared Saudi Income

An imam was taken into custody in Angers. He is accused of defrauding tens of thousands of euros in social benefits, including nearly 150,000 euros in income paid by the Saudi Arabian embassy in France.
The case came to light when the French imam moved to relocate to Haute-Saône, when he found that he was listed as close to Salafist circles by intelligence agents.
According to Europe1, in addition to the 150,000 euros in undeclared income paid by the Saudi Arabian embassy, the defendant would also have benefited from nearly 40,000 euros in social benefits between 2015 and 2018.
The imam was finally arrested on Tuesday with his ex-partner, who was released a few hours after the arrest. As for the defendant, he is undergoing questioning for fraud, undeclared work and justification of the benefits received.
