French Drug Trafficking Suspect Arrested in Morocco on Interpol Warrant

Under an international arrest warrant issued via Interpol by the French authorities, a French national has just been arrested by the police in Essaouira. The Moroccan justice system must soon rule on his extradition.
In a statement, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) indicates that it has arrested a Frenchman "who is the subject of an international search notice issued in 2017 by the judicial authorities of his country, for drug trafficking".
Aged 38, the man was illegally established in Morocco and his arrest "comes as part of the efforts made by the DGSN services to strengthen international cooperation mechanisms in security matters and to intensify the procedures for tracking down persons wanted internationally for drug and psychotropic substance cases," it is pleased to announce.
It was during a routine traffic stop that the man was arrested. He was riding "a motorcycle without license plates and without documents, which required him to be subjected to the procedures of checking in the security databases." The operation revealed that "the defendant was the subject of an international search notice issued by the French authorities, after having been convicted in absentia in a drug trafficking case."
The Frenchman was placed in custody pending the initiation of judicial proceedings for his possible extradition to his country of origin.
