French Customs Seize 1.2 Tons of Cannabis in Truck During Lockdown

Despite the confinement, a Spanish truck with 1.2 tons of cannabis on board was intercepted by French customs at a motorway toll booth in the Alpes-Maritimes, in the south of France.

The truck was intercepted on Thursday at the La Turbie motorway toll booth, according to the MAP, which reports that the Spanish driver "was heading to Italy with the cargo". He was immediately detained after being presented to the Marseille prosecutor’s office. For the investigators in charge of the case, this intercepted truck demonstrates that if small trafficking teams are having trouble getting supplies, the more structured teams still have the means to attempt coups, in "do or die" mode.

A Nice magistrate claims not to understand the fact that traffickers persist in taking such risks, when they are aware of the "current number of checks". The policeman, for his part, thinks that "the global production of drugs remains as strong as ever", and in the desire to bring it into the territory, the traffickers are willing to take all kinds of risks. He also notes that all the strategies used to facilitate the transport of these drugs are now very well known to the security forces. "Even land convoys with several cars have become delicate due to the checks," he adds.

But what about the small street-level traffickers? He says they "adapt to current conditions, like business leaders, by modifying their schedules in case of curfew and offering their clients product delivery".

Despite the confinement, "drug prices at retail in France would have increased by 30% due to the scarcity of the merchandise," the same source specifies.
