French Customs Blocks Algerian Spread Import Over EU Dairy Regulations

Rumors about France banning an Algerian spread have been persistent since Friday, September 13, the date on which a shipment of this product was blocked at the port of Marseille.
The information was confirmed on Saturday by the French daily La Provence, which revealed that the French customs authorities have prevented the entry into French territory of shipments of El Mordjene due to a violation of European regulations on the import of dairy products or dairy-based products from non-EU countries.
Under EU Regulation 2021/405, Algeria is not on the list of countries authorized to export to the European market milk, dairy products or products containing milk. However, the milk used by the Cebon company based in Oran, the producer of the El Mordjene spread, would come from France. This "milk powder was imported from France, before being processed in Algeria," informs the French media.
And to add: "This case could have direct consequences on the very evolution of this market in France". El Mordjene is a product highly prized by the large Algerian community established in France, to the point, it is said, of becoming a formidable competitor for the famous Italian brand Nutella.
