France Unveils Plan to Combat Online Islamist Extremism 24/7

France wants to step up its fight against Islamism on the ground as well as online. Marlène Schiappa, Minister Delegate for Citizenship, unveils the action plan.

This plan describes the actions the French government has taken to overcome Islamism online. This involves the opening of the Pharos platform 24/7. Following the events in Conflans, the Pharos Platform has been strengthened with the mobilization of 20 police and gendarmerie specialists in the fight against cybercrime, a government press release said. This platform is now mobilized 24/7.

Social networks and platforms, gathered in a Permanent Contact Group every 15 days at the Ministry of the Interior, have been mobilized to work concretely with the internal security forces on the reversal of the reporting logic, responses to requisitions issued by Pharos, the sharing of information on content of apology for terrorism as well as the fight against terrorist propaganda.

Another flagship action: the signing of an agreement between the Minister of the Interior represented by Marlène Schiappa, Minister Delegate for Citizenship and the Point de Contact association. In this framework, a gendarmerie advisor was installed on December 1, 2020, within the online reporting service for illegal content for increased cooperation with government services.

"Today in France, in 2020, we have an entire generation that is becoming radicalized by watching videos on social networks. It is no longer possible to let shocking and unacceptable content thrive and on which our children can fall when going on their favorite network! It is unthinkable for me that a child could come across a video of beheading, stoning, calls for hatred... The propaganda that Daesh has been feeding us for years and that we must fight relentlessly," said the minister.
