France Senate Passes Controversial Islamism Law
The Senate voted Wednesday on Bruno Retailleau’s text against "Islamist entrism". It creates new offenses, sparking outrage from the left and concern among Muslims.
The text was approved by 208 votes against 124. Submitted by the leader of Republican senators and candidate for the 2027 presidential election, the proposal is based on a recent government report. Right-wing lawmakers want to arm the State against Muslim Brotherhood infiltration strategies in education and sports. The flagship measure establishes a criminal offense sanctioning coordinated practices contrary to constitutional principles. The arsenal also facilitates the dissolution of associations and subjects the construction of places of worship to prefectural approval. However, the amendment banning the veil for minors was rejected.

The left formed a united front to reject these measures. Socialist leader Patrick Kanner denounced a "political tract" and accused the right of copying "the excesses of the far right". Ecologist Guillaume Gontard even expressed his "shame" at an ideology of hatred. The government also distanced itself. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who is preparing his own bill, questioned the constitutionality of the new offense, recalling that the target should remain "all those who violate the laws of the Republic".

Facing criticism, Bruno Retailleau claimed the urgency to "act firmly and quickly" against a documented threat. He assured that he was not attacking "a religion, but Islamism", warning that conflation served extremist interests. These justifications struggle to reassure the faithful, alarmed by Islamophobia fueled according to them by the political and media right. The law now heads to the National Assembly, where its adoption promises to be far more complex.
