France Launches Task Force to Combat Rising Anti-Religious Incidents

Friday 17 December 2021, by Armel

The French government has announced the establishment of a mission to combat anti-religious acts in France due to their increase this year in the country. Proposals are expected by February 2022.

On the Cnews set, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin presented a worrying assessment of anti-religious acts in France, specifying that his services recorded exactly 1,380 incidents, down 17.2% compared to the same period in 2019.

In detail, some 686 anti-Christian acts took place this year, compared to 921 in 2019, a decrease of 25%. A 15% decrease was also recorded for anti-Semitic acts: the latter went from 617 in 2019 to 523 in 2021.

As for anti-Muslim acts, they went from 129 incidents recorded in 2019 to 171 in 2021, an increase of 32%. A worrying situation for the government, but also for Muslim leaders, especially during the election period.

Faced with this reality, the government has commissioned two parliamentarians, Moselle deputy Ludovic Mendès (LREM), and Hauts-de-Seine deputy Isabelle Florennes (Modem). They are "in charge of a temporary mission whose purpose is the fight against anti-religious acts." The two deputies will also be able to make "any useful proposal," the mission letter specified.
