France to Launch National Consultation on Discrimination in January

During his interview with Brut, French President Emmanuel Macron had announced the launch of a platform for reporting discrimination. This launch will be effective in January 2021.

On Europe 1, Elisabeth Moreno, Minister Delegate for Gender Equality, Diversity and Equal Opportunities, indicated on Tuesday that the French government will launch a citizen consultation "to allow all French people to talk about discrimination." "The idea of this citizen convention that we are going to launch is to allow all French people, those who are discriminated against but also those who are not, to be able to talk about this issue of discrimination," she explained.

When the minister spoke of a "citizen convention", she "was referring to the online citizen consultation announced by the President of the Republic during his interview with Brut," it was specified in Ms. Moreno’s office. In early December, the French head of state had promised the launch of a national platform for reporting discrimination, managed by the state, the Defender of Rights and associations. "Today, when you have a skin color that is not white, you are much more controlled (...). We are identified as a problem factor and it is untenable," he had deplored.

"In our society, being a white man creates more objective conditions for accessing the position that is mine, for finding housing, for finding a job, than being an Asian, black or Maghrebi man, or an Asian, black or Maghrebi woman," Mr. Macron also stated in an interview with L’Express.

According to the details provided by Ms. Moreno, the online consultation on discrimination will allow the French to bring the government "another perspective and other ideas on how we can tackle it." "We know the discrimination in our country, but we may not know them all," she said.
