France Issues Travel Alert for Morocco Following Tourist Murders

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has just updated its notice on Morocco, urging its nationals traveling to the kingdom to be particularly vigilant, especially in isolated areas.
This warning comes after the murder of two Scandinavian tourists by four individuals in the vicinity of Mount Toubkal. The investigation revealed that the suspects had pledged allegiance to the terrorist organization Daesh.
"It is recommended to be extremely vigilant in travel, especially in isolated areas," writes the Quai d’Orsay, advising "not to travel alone and to contact an approved travel agency."
After these murders, the Moroccan authorities fear a drop in the number of tourists, one of the main sources of foreign exchange for Morocco. Last year, Morocco recorded the arrival of some 11.35 million tourists, including 1.6 million French. Many foreign tourists are expected for the end-of-year holidays in the kingdom, especially in the very popular city of Marrakech.
