France Deems Morocco Safest African Destination for Tourists

During the update of the "travel advice", Morocco was qualified by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the only country without risks for French tourists in Africa.

Four colors distinguish the countries of the world in this assessment of the level of risk faced by tourists. Red means "formally prohibited", orange "not recommended except for compelling reasons", yellow "heightened vigilance", and finally green for "normal vigilance".

Placed at the green level, Morocco is considered safe and risk-free for tourists, in parallel with the United States, Canada, Australia, Argentina, Japan and European countries.

On the other hand, the majority of African countries have been classified under the "heightened vigilance" heading, with the exception of Algeria where the three levels are displayed across the entire territory, yellow, orange and red.

The Quai d’Orsay nevertheless recalls that in December last year, two Scandinavian tourists were killed in the Imlil region. "On December 17, 2018, two European tourists were murdered in an isolated mountain area, in the High Atlas. The Moroccan authorities indicated that the suspects belonged to a terrorist group," it reads.

The Kingdom remains safe but French tourists traveling there must "observe a certain vigilance in public places or gatherings and avoid traveling alone in isolated or remote places."
