France Considers Ban on Ritual Slaughter Without Stunning, Sparking Halal Concerns

While France is about to follow Belgium in banning ritual slaughter without stunning, the "Halal in Danger" Collective demands an immediate moratorium on the project.

France is about to follow in the footsteps of Belgium, which has banned ritual slaughter without stunning on its territory (Flanders and Wallonia). This is what the "Halal in Danger" Collective fears, which has made known that a project to ban slaughter without stunning would be under development in France.

According to this Collective, the recent opinion of the European Court of Justice on Organic Certification concerning halal would be the harbingers of this project.

Using this ban for political purposes based on animal welfare is also what the "Halal in Danger" Collective fears. It argues that various scientific studies have produced conclusions that are far from being so categorical.

Indeed, the scientists, "Halal in Danger" will point out, disagree on the least painful slaughter process for the animal, especially since it claims that it is not necessary to resort to a stunning slaughter process because ritual slaughter (without stunning) is a natural stunning process for the animal.

Furthermore, "Halal in Danger" denounces the stigmatization of certain religious communities. It believes that it is used as a diversion in order to no longer raise the fundamental questions that are those of the agro-industry.

For the Collective, the latter is driven by an imperative of profitability and has never placed the issue of animal sensitivity, from breeding to slaughter, at the center. A situation that is likely to undermine the freedom of worship. Faced with this, "Halal in Danger" demands only one thing: an immediate moratorium on the project to ban slaughter without stunning.
