France Bolsters Security for Africa Cup Final Amid Potential Celebrations

France is taking security measures in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Montbéliard as well as in the departments of Ain and Côte-d’Or to prevent unrest in case of an Algeria victory in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) on Friday, July 19, 2019.
The outbursts of joy that prevail after each victory of the Algerian national football team explain the security system in place in certain French cities. Paris and Marseille are under heavy police surveillance, similar to the security measures taken on July 14 for the Senegal-Algeria match.
On the Champs-Elysées, 2,500 law enforcement officers are planned, as well as additional personnel to control the unrest in other neighborhoods of Paris, such as Barbès, and in Seine-Saint-Denis, reported atlasinfo.fr. In the Phocaean city, and on the initiative of the President of the Arab World Institute, Jack Lang, a giant screen will broadcast the match on the facade of the institution, with a significant security detachment.
In addition, decrees have been issued prohibiting the transport and use of flammable products, firecrackers and fireworks, as well as the consumption of alcohol on public roads and the wearing of hoods.
During the celebrations of Algeria’s victory against Nigeria in the semi-finals and the Bastille Day festivities, 282 people were arrested, mainly during incidents in several French cities.
