Former French Minister Urges EU to Recognize Morocco’s Sahara Sovereignty

French politician Jean-Louis Borloo believes that the European Union should follow in the footsteps of the United States in recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
In a statement to the MAP, the former European MP said that "the EU must understand that Morocco is not only a privileged partner but an absolutely vital partner in the relationship between Europe and Africa".
For the former French minister, the American recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara is the culmination of "the whole journey of the Moroccan people, of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and his father, the late His Majesty Hassan II". This decision, which "completely changes the game", will have a positive impact on the region, he said.
"There is something emotional about it. This territory (the Sahara) is so sublime, so promising in terms of economic development. It completely changes the game. It justifies His Majesty’s vision on investments, in particular the port of Dakhla and then to make this region an energy hub for part of the Sahel countries and beyond. The world’s first renewable energy hub," added Mr. Borloo.
