Former Barakacity President Acquitted in Cyberbullying Case, Demands Apology from Interior Minister

Prosecuted for cyberbullying in September 2020, Driss Yemmou, known as Idriss Sihamedi, former president of the Barakacity association, was acquitted this Friday, January 15 in the case that pitted him against former Charlie Hebdo journalist Zineb El Rhazoui. At the end of the verdict of the Paris Criminal Court, he demanded an apology from Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.
On his Twitter account, the former president of Barakacity thanked "the Lord of men" as well as his "talented lawyers". He also called on Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin to "modestly present his apologies" to him. The French Minister of the Interior would have affirmed his guilt before the trial.
In this case, the Paris Criminal Court had requested 10 months of suspended prison sentence against Driss Yemmou. He had launched a campaign on social networks targeting the Franco-Moroccan woman with the hashtag #BalanceZinebElRhazoui.
In its verdict, the 10-2 chamber of the criminal court noted that "the whole of these messages was indeed constitutive" of harassment. "However, the court observes that no evidence of the actual deterioration of Zineb El Rhazoui’s living conditions, as required by the law, has been provided," added the president of the court. Also, he recalled the existence of an email in which the journalist stated that she had not been affected by the insults and criticism against her.
