Football: Morocco proposes an unprecedented "common championship" between Africa and Europe

The idea of confining African and European football to their respective zones could soon belong to the past. Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, is calling for a revolution in the international calendar through the organization of a "common championship". For the leader, it is imperative to bridge the current technical gap: "the sporting gaps between European and African selections are very important and we are looking to reduce them," he explained to the magazine France Football.

While the exact format remains to be invented, the objective is clear: to get out of isolation in order to progress. "The question remains how to organize a balanced and intelligent competition," he acknowledges, while ensuring that "with good planning, we can organize a common championship that will contribute to revaluing African players and discovering talents."

This vision goes beyond the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The ambition is for the Kingdom to play "a central role in the development of African football." A legitimacy that Fouzi Lekjaa bases on local success, the fruit of work begun "16 years ago" with the Mohammed VI Academy. Launched in 2009, this structure has become "a true breeding ground for talent" whose fruits the country is "now reaping."
