Flowers by the water. On Saturday, October 17, residents stop on Amsteldijk in Amsterdam, near the spot where Hajar’s body was found the day before. One local resident makes no secret of her anger. “I don’t even have the words. What gives anyone the right to do something like that? It gives me goosebumps,” she tells local television AT5.

Another resident says she is “in shock.” “I think it’s horrible that the life of such a young woman was taken,” she says. The bouquets laid near the Amstel reflect the grief the tragedy has caused in this neighborhood in southern Amsterdam.

On the same Saturday, Hajar’s loved ones issued their first statement through the Dutch organization Namens de Familie. After nearly two weeks of waiting, their words convey their exhaustion: “The great uncertainty has now given way to sadness and mourning.”

“The uncertainty has been very hard to bear”

“The disappearance of a loved one is distressing. The uncertainty has been very hard to bear,” the family statement says, as reported by RTL Nieuws and AT5. Her loved ones say they have been deeply affected by the events of recent days.

Hajar, 29, had been missing since October 4. Her body was found in the waters of the Amstel on Friday, October 16. Police are treating her death as a homicide and are continuing their investigation. The precise circumstances of her death have yet to be established.

In their statement, her loved ones make one request: to be able to say goodbye to Hajar in peace and privacy, away from public attention. After the search and days of uncertainty, they now wish to be left alone with their grief.
