Florian M., the police officer who shot Nahel, breaks his silence: "I live in fear and depression

The police officer accused of fatally wounding the young Nahel Merzouk in June 2023 has broken his silence. For the first time, the 40-year-old sergeant Florian M. has spoken out in an interview, discussing his personal situation, his detention, and his reintegration, as he awaits his trial before the Assize Court.

The police officer described a difficult psychological situation to Actu Police since his release. "It has deteriorated, I have gone through anxiety attacks," he testified. He explained that he is worried about the safety of his family, who are still the subject of death threats. "After a few months, I was diagnosed with severe depression," he confided, stating that he is being followed by a psychiatrist and is under medication.

Despite this condition, he has been reintegrated into the police services, in a new assignment. "This reintegration was important to me," he assured, welcoming the good reception from his new hierarchy and colleagues. "I no longer do the same work as before, but I do my best."

Waiting for the trial after five months of detention

Florian M. is awaiting the examination of his appeal, after an order to refer him to the Assize Court was issued. The prosecution has requested a trial for murder. This procedure follows the events of June 2023 in Nanterre, where Nahel, 17 years old, had been killed by the police officer’s shot during a refusal to comply, triggering several nights of riots across France.

The police officer was incarcerated for five months after the events. A period during which he "focused" on his defense, doing "a lot of sports and reading" to cope. However, he describes the end of his detention as grueling: "The isolation became very heavy, to the point that I talked to myself and paced around."
