Fez-Meknes Tourism Sector Poised for Post-Pandemic Recovery in Morocco

Thanks to the Covid-19 vaccination campaign, tourism professionals in the Fez-Meknes region hope for a revival of tourism activity during the first half of 2021. Despite the blow that has hit the sector, optimism is on the agenda.
During a regional meeting, recently held between the officials of the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT), tourism professionals and officials of the Regional Tourism Council (CRT) of Fez, the ONMT indicated that the region’s recovery strategy should be exceptionally offensive and the levers should be put into action quickly. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the Office expressed its wish "to put Fez and Meknes on the starting blocks of the recovery," reports La Vie éco.
"We are well aware that the tourism professionals in the Fez-Meknes region are going through a particularly difficult crisis and that all the players in the sector must now unite their efforts to lay the foundations for the recovery," said Adel El Fakir, general manager of the ONMT, stressing that the strategy will take into account air transport, the establishment of a strong brand for Fez-Meknes and the hinterland with international markets and an approach that targets the domestic market more.
Currently, in the Fez-Meknes region, a total of 56 projects with an investment of 1.715 billion DH are under construction, said the tourism delegation in Fez. With a hotel capacity of 4,444 additional beds, these various sites are spread between the cities of Fez, Meknes, Ifrane, Moulay Yaacoub, and Taza, in addition to the provinces of El Hajeb and Sefrou.
For the Regional Tourism Council, it is important to put in place a new strategy for the development of domestic tourism, in order to alleviate the impact of the health crisis related to Covid-19. Thus, the marketing action plan put in place by the ONMT, and focused on a strong "culture and heritage" brand for Fez-Meknes, and a "nature and discovery" positioning for the hinterland including Ifrane, Boulemane, Séfrou and Taza, should stimulate the recovery of the tourism sector.
