Farewell from Walid Regragui: "Thank you to Morocco", emotion grips the Atlas Lions
Walid Regragui bid farewell to the Moroccan national team on Thursday with a moving message, marking the end of his era. Mohamed Ouahbi is to be officially appointed as his successor at a press conference at the Mohammed VI Complex.
The outgoing coach published a video on his social media recounting his journey with the Atlas Lions. He accompanied these images with a message of gratitude: "Dima Maghrib.. God - the Homeland - the King.. Thank you", thus concluding his mandate which began in August 2022.
This transition comes after the defeat in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations against Senegal (1-0), on January 18 last. While Regragui did not win the continental title, he will remain the man who led Morocco to a historic fourth place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation officially announces on Thursday the appointment of Mohamed Ouahbi and his staff. This quick decision aims to give the new coach sufficient leeway before the start of the international training camp scheduled in twenty days.
The challenges are immediate for the new staff. Morocco will face Ecuador in Spain on March 27, then Paraguay in France on March 31. These two friendly tests constitute the final preparation before the start of the 2026 World Cup, scheduled in about three months.
