Exhibition Showcases Muslim Culture in Belgium Through Photography

Titled "Mosaic", a new exhibition has been taking place since February 5 at the Centrissime, the body responsible for promoting the Pays du Centre region. This new exhibition is an opportunity for a meeting between three photographers and citizens of Muslim traditions, origins or cultures in Brussels or Wallonia.
Born out of the concern of seeing the stigmatization and discrimination towards this community grow, the "Mosaic" project represents an encounter between Viviane Stevens, Bénédicte Thomas and Véronique Vercheval from the De Vizu collective and those primarily concerned. In a society that has deliberately set aside part of its minorities, skepticism is growing day by day and it is essential to find each other again to move towards living together, reports RTBF.
Through these images, it is the daily life that is revealed. Work, young people, their elders, celebrations, family, doubts, joys, sorrows. The images are followed by texts by journalist Maryam Benayad, who knows and can speak of this culture, while addressing issues associated with our society. Thus, the value of representation in the media and public spheres has been proven in the identity construction of the younger generation. And that’s what this exhibition aims for: "to offer a valuable and positive image of men and women with whom young Belgians of Muslim origin and culture can identify".
At the same time, other activities are planned as part of this exhibition. This includes the "Do you believe it? Do you not believe it?" project, which aims to establish an interconvictional dialogue between the Muslim, Catholic and Protestant communities of La Louvière. In addition, on February 11 at 7 p.m., there was an online meeting of the Mosaic photographers and a citizen café. On February 22 at 5 p.m., Hassan Jarfi will give his testimony online, followed by the presentation of online educational tools on February 23 at 2 p.m. On February 25, the theme "Why should interculturality be favored?" will be developed, also online.
