Escaped French Prisoner Captured in Spain After Consulate Break

The 43-year-old detainee from the central prison of Poissy (Yvelines), who escaped during an outing to the Moroccan consulate in Pontoise (Val-d’Oise) on December 20, was arrested this week in Spain.
Sentenced to fifteen years in prison for kidnapping followed by homicide, the man was serving the last months of his sentence. The outing to the consulate was intended to carry out administrative procedures. He was supervised by prison administration officers, recalls the newspaper Le Parisien.
Late in the morning, the detainee asked to go out and smoke a cigarette. He then fled, getting into a waiting vehicle. He was not handcuffed.
The Versailles public prosecutor’s office had opened an investigation for organized prison escape. The Brigade for the Repression of Banditry (BRB) of Versailles and the Interdepartmental Judicial Police Service of Val-d’Oise (SIPJ 95) were in charge of the investigations to identify the accomplices.
The arrest took place in Spain as part of a European arrest warrant. The detainee was presented to the Spanish judicial authorities. An extradition procedure to France is expected.
