Eric Zemmour Vows to Protect French Identity, Not Change Islam
Saturday 22 January 2022, by
The 2022 presidential candidate, Eric Zemmour, assures that he would not change Islam in France. However, he is committed to ensuring that Muslims respect the country.
"I don’t want to change Islam, even if in France religions can be the subject of criticism," Eric Zemmour assured in an interview with the Israeli daily Maariv. According to him, Muslim countries are free to establish Islam as the state religion, "but they will not come and give us lessons [...] ". "I protect the French people, their identity, their language, their history, their tradition and their customs. All countries do it. Only the French elites wonder if this is legitimate. I will make sure that Muslims respect France," the Reconquête party candidate pledged.
Eric Zemmour maintains his opposition to the wearing of religious symbols in the public sphere. "In my time, we did not wear a kippah in the street, and Jews today no longer wear it anyway, so as not to be the target of attacks," he said, before recounting a part of the history of his parents. "My father and grandfather spoke excellent Arabic," the candidate revealed. "They were also connoisseurs of Arab music that they loved and continued to listen to even after their arrival in France. So I know this world from the inside. I know that they [the Muslims, Ed.] respect those who respect themselves and despise those who do not respect themselves."
