Dutch Travel Agency Plans Pre-Vacation COVID-19 Testing for Morocco Trips

The Dutch travel agency Corendon, operating in Belgium, is working to develop a plan to test tourists before they leave for vacation. Hundreds of thousands of tests would be needed, said Steven van der Heijden, the director, on Sunday.

Going on vacation currently would require a little more sacrifice, given the coronavirus pandemic whose damage is still fresh in people’s minds. "Vacations and 1.5 meter distancing don’t go well together. But if you put people in a hotel that you are sure are not infected, it can work," said Mr. Van der Heijden. "We could offer this in Turkey but also to go to Sicily and Sardinia. We are in discussion with the local authorities," he told 7sur7.be.

The European Commission is still working on travel proposals and protocols to allow Europeans to go on vacation this summer. Corendon believes it will be able to organize all-inclusive trips by the end of July. It is a fact that the Moroccan destination remains highly sought after by tourists who must be impatient for the Moroccan sky to be accessible again.

Corendon was initially supposed to allow half a million people to go on vacation. "If it’s 200,000 or 300,000 this year, then we’ll need the same amount of tests," warned Mr. Van der Heijden.
