Drought Measures in Morocco Drive Up Prices for Hammams and Car Washes

Faced with the drought, the Moroccan authorities have decided to strike hard. Since last month, car washes and traditional and modern baths have been forced to close three days a week. A decision that makes the owners grind their teeth, worried about their income and their employees.
Direct consequence: prices are soaring. Car washing has gone from 40 to 50 dirhams, or even much more, and some hammams have also increased their rates or even doubled them.
For customers, it’s a cold shower. "It’s already hard to make ends meet, so now..." complains a regular hammam-goer. "And it’s not normal to deprive us of our little pleasures!"
It remains to be seen whether this measure will be sufficient to curb the drought. In the meantime, Moroccans will have to get used to paying more to wash their car and relax in the hammam.
