Driver Sentenced to 4 Years for Fatal High-Speed Crash in Brussels Suburb

The Brussels police court sentenced the driver responsible for an accident that killed a pedestrian on February 2 on the Philippe Werrie square in Jette to four years in prison. In addition to the prison sentence, he must pay a heavy fine.
The sentence imposed on Youssef C. amounts to four years in prison, a fine of 24,000 euros and a lifetime driving ban... The accused’s vehicle hit a 51-year-old pedestrian who died, and a passenger was seriously injured. The driver, in his thirties, was driving at a speed of 125 km/h according to the experts, reports Dernière heure.
The accident occurred on February 2, around 5:05 am. The driver was speeding on the Charles Woeste avenue, towards the Philippe Werrie square, in Jette. He was returning from a night in a nightclub with a friend. According to the surveillance camera images, the 51-year-old victim hit the windshield and was thrown into the air. The vehicle, on the other hand, had hit the central curb, gone over the tram tracks before ending up on the other side of the square.
The driver had left the scene of the accident before turning himself in to the police at 11:30 am. He had claimed not to have seen the pedestrian’s body. But the argument is not well-founded according to the court. Moreover, the investigation had proven that Youssef C. had consumed cocaine and was driving at 125 km/h just before the accident.
The court deplored his behavior behind the wheel, all the more so as he had already been convicted in the past for speeding.
