Diplomatic Tensions Disrupt France-Morocco Business Summit Amid Growing Economic Fallout

The diplomatic chill between France and Morocco is now spreading to the economic field. Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux, head of the French employers’ organization (Medef), was forced to postpone his planned trip to Rabat on June 26.
The visit was canceled by the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), due to the current diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The Franco-Moroccan economic relations, hitherto spared by the political discord, are experiencing for the first time the backlash of the diplomatic crisis. According to the explanations provided by the CGEM to RFI, the current context of the Morocco-France relationship does not favor such a meeting. This postponement marks a refusal to strengthen official friendly ties in a degraded climate, both diplomatically and now economically.
For months, Morocco no longer has an ambassador in Paris and signals of discontent towards France are multiplying, recalls the same source. France’s attempts to get closer to Algeria, as well as the position deemed insufficiently favorable by France on the Sahara issue, have fueled tensions.
