Defense Challenges Evidence in Brussels Airport Heist Trial, Seeks Acquittal for Moroccan Suspect

The lawyer of Houssein B., of Moroccan origin and accused of being one of the main perpetrators of the Brussels-National airport robbery in February 2013, pleaded on Monday before the Brussels Court of Appeal for his acquittal.
Ms. Bovy reviewed the telephone data and the GPS beacon of her client’s car, concluding that there was no evidence to affirm that Houssein B. was on the tarmac of the airport on the evening of the robbery, armed with a submachine gun. She also demonstrated the inconsistencies of certain elements of evidence presented by the police, such as the distance between the place where the vehicles used during the robbery were set on fire and the location where the Moroccan was at the time of the events.
The public prosecutor continues to maintain that Houssein B. is one of the main perpetrators of the robbery, but he could not request a prison sentence, due to the obvious exceeding of the reasonable time limit for trial. At first instance, he had requested an eight-year prison sentence, but the court had followed the defense and acquitted Houssein B. as well as all his co-defendants.
It remains to be seen whether the Court of Appeal will also follow the defense and acquit Houssein B. this time. However, the arguments presented by Ms. Bovy seem to cast doubt on her client’s guilt in the Brussels airport robbery.
