Deadly Rabies Case Shocks France: Traveler’s Tragic Fate Sparks Health Alert

This extremely rare case in metropolitan France has triggered the opening of an epidemiological investigation to determine the origin of the contamination, while precautionary measures have been taken for the healthcare staff.

The patient, in his thirties, had been admitted on September 18 with characteristic symptoms of the disease, including hydrophobia and severe convulsions. His condition required placement in the intensive care unit and artificial coma. The diagnosis was confirmed by the Pasteur Institute, but the man died the next day, reports L’Indépendant.

According to an internal testimony from the hospital, the patient worked in a garden center in Perpignan and had recently returned from a trip to Morocco. Scarifications were reportedly observed on his back, but the origin of the infection, likely a bite, remains to be determined. The autopsy should provide more information for the investigation.

Although the transmission of rabies from human to human is considered non-existent, the hospital confirmed that the healthcare personnel who had been in contact with the patient have been vaccinated as a precautionary measure. A nurse, who would have received a projection during an intervention, has in particular followed a complete vaccination protocol. The Regional Health Agency was dispatched to the site after the death.
