Sixteen people were killed and twenty-one injured in a serious funicular accident that occurred on Wednesday, September 3, late in the day in Lisbon. Among the injured victims is a Moroccan national, confirmed the Moroccan embassy in Portugal, whose services are mobilized.

The national, a Moroccan living in Canada who was on a tourist stay in Portugal, was hospitalized and her health condition is considered stable. The Moroccan ambassador to Lisbon, Othman Bahnini, assured that the diplomatic services were mobilized "to provide the necessary support and assistance" to the victim, in close consultation with the Portuguese authorities.

The accident occurred when the funicular, one of the symbols of the Portuguese capital, derailed from its trajectory before crashing into a building. Faced with this tragedy, which the government has described as an "unprecedented tragedy", a national mourning has been decreed in Portugal.
