Dating Show Sparks Uproar: Religious Conversion Demand Ignites Cultural Clash

During the Spanish dating show "First Dates" aired on the Cuatro channel, Hamza, a 21-year-old young man of Moroccan origin, asked his guest Gisela, a 19-year-old Spanish woman, to convert to Islam. The sequence sparked a lively controversy on social media.
The two young people in search of their soulmate got to know each other at the beginning of the show. Gisela, from Badajoz, is a waitress in a small café, but she plans to continue her studies. Hamza, on the other hand, is known on TikTok where he expresses his passion for music. So far, everything was going well. The "date" took a different turn when the young man stated that he could only marry a woman who practices the same religion as him. An option deemed "illogical" by Gisela, who believes that marriage should not be restricted to religion.
But the Moroccan influencer remained firm on his position. Then, at the end of the date, Hamza hinted that he could engage in a relationship with Gisela if she agreed to convert to Islam, dress more decently, and forget her past relationships. In response, Gisela said she could consider this possibility if she really fell in love, but she refused to wear a veil. A response deemed satisfactory by the young man, who observed that many Muslim women no longer wear the veil.
The broadcast of the show sparked a wave of reactions on the web. Opinions are divided. While some consider Hamza’s demands towards the non-Muslim young woman to be excessive, others believe that he has the right to define the criteria for choosing his partner. To end the controversy, Hamza reacted on his X account, explaining that he had made these statements as part of an "entertaining performance and a social experiment aimed at provoking debate." "I went to do a show and create a controversy to convey a social message, and my partner understood it."
