Customs Seize 76 kg of Cannabis from Morocco-Netherlands Drug Route on French Highway

Two Moroccan truck drivers transporting 76 kg of cannabis herb and resin from Tangier and destined for the Netherlands were apprehended by customs officers on the A20 in Tarn-et-Garonne. Aged 35 and 39, the suspects were placed in custody pending their immediate appearance trial, which was postponed to June 9.
During their appearance before the Montauban judicial court, the two drivers requested the postponement of their case in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure, reports La Dépêche. Accompanied by their interpreter and their lawyer, their request was granted.
It was during a check at a rest area on the A20 in Montalzat that the customs officers discovered the cargo of leeks, as well as the 56 kg of cannabis herb and the 20 kg of cannabis resin hidden inside the cabin of the truck. The value of this seizure is estimated at nearly 310,000 euros, according to customs estimates.
The truck drivers explained, during their custody, that they had been approached in Spain by individuals who would have forced them to transport the drugs. They claim to have been escorted by these strangers in an Audi, although the vehicle in question has not yet been identified by the investigators.
Residing in Morocco, the accused admitted to not having an employment contract and claim to earn between 300 and 400 euros per trip to the Netherlands. They make these round trips once or twice a month.
Although considered as secondary actors within a larger network, they risk up to 10 years in prison in this case, the newspaper specifies.
Their lawyer pleaded for the release of her clients under judicial supervision, but the court issued a committal order to the Beausoleil prison, fearing a flight to Morocco.
