COVID-19 Pushes 300,000 Moroccans Below Poverty Line, 10 Million at Risk

The covid-19 pandemic will increase the poverty rate in Morocco by one percentage point. This is information revealed by a report jointly prepared by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the World Bank.
These three institutions have drawn up a review of the potential socioeconomic impacts of the covid-19 crisis for the year 2020. According to this report, "300,000 Moroccans are moving below the poverty line with 32 DH per day and 10 million other Moroccans in a precarious situation, could become poor or find themselves at the poverty line". The report also mentions a worsening of gender inequalities that will be observed, reports lavieeco.com.
The report goes further by announcing, on the economic and budgetary level, "a 1.5% drop in real GDP in 2020, a budget deficit of more than 6% of GDP, public debt of around 75% of GDP and a current account deficit of around 7% of GDP".
This report from the three institutions is a global reflection "on the support measures they can bring to Morocco in its strategy to respond to the covid-19 pandemic".
