Convicted Rapist Flees to Morocco After 12-Year Sentence in French Trial

Hassan Oamou, one of the 51 defendants in the trial of the Mazan rapes, was sentenced to 12 years in prison by the criminal court of Vaucluse, which handed down its verdict on Thursday, December 19 in the Mazan rape case.
Dominique Pelicot, a central figure in this extraordinary trial, received the maximum sentence: 20 years in prison. But among the 51 defendants, one man is missing: Hassan Oamou. Tried in absentia, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison for aggravated rape.
Around 30 years old, Hassan Oamou was known on the "Coco" site under the pseudonym "Rémy". It was on this platform that Dominique Pelicot recruited men to abuse his ex-wife. On the night of March 6 to 7, 2018, Oamou went to the couple’s home to participate in the abuse.
His criminal record shows twelve convictions for offenses ranging from drug trafficking to weapons possession, as well as violence. When contacted by investigators in September 2021, he claimed to be in Morocco and had no intention of returning to France.
However, his phone line had been located in Romania a few weeks earlier. Money transfers made by his mother and withdrawn in that same country suggest that he was staying there with his partner.
An international arrest warrant has been issued against him and has just been extended. The prosecution had requested 15 years of criminal imprisonment.
