A Tiktoker shocked Internet users, especially Muslims in Strasbourg, by posting on his account a video of himself staging a reading of Surat Maryam in the Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune church in Strasbourg, in honor of the Virgin Mary on International Women’s Rights Day on March 8.
An unusual recitation at the Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune church in Strasbourg. A Tiktoker staged himself reading Surat Maryam in the Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune church in Strasbourg, reports SaphirNews. Seeing him film himself in this position shocked a parishioner passing through the place of worship. She asked him to leave, but the man stayed until he finished filming the video. On March 9, the Tiktoker posted the video on social media, sparking strong outrage.
The Great Mosque of Strasbourg (GMS) condemned "the provocative and disrespectful act" of the Tiktoker "who, without invitation and without respect for the principles of fraternity and dialogue, violated the sacredness of the Church of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune by reciting Surat Maryam" when it is "in itself bearer of great dignity and respected by Muslims". It also denounced an "intolerable offense" and an "unsustainable provocation".
"If this respect (between Muslims and Christians, ed.) is not reciprocal, then it is only an empty word, a concept without foundation. [...] We, the Muslims of Strasbourg, will not tolerate individuals in search of buzz and visibility to, through their ignorance and arrogance, trample on the most elementary principles of respect and jeopardize years of common effort and work," the GMS said. The religious institution emphasizes that it will not allow "these unfortunate acts to shake the foundations of the cohesion that unites us, not only within our city, but also within our country, France."
