Colruyt Defends COVID-19 Safety Measures After Employee Death

Following the death of Mohamed Nahi, a member of the staff of the Forest plant due to the coronavirus, Colruyt claims to have gone beyond what the government advises in various areas as precautions to be taken.

"We are a people-oriented company and we have always closely followed all the measures imposed by the government," declares Silja Decock, Colruyt’s spokesperson, to Belga. According to her, the company has gone beyond what the government advises in various areas and has also taken additional measures in recent weeks.

"We have not yet received a letter (concerning a complaint, editor’s note). For legal reasons and out of respect for the victim and his family, we cannot and do not want to say more," the company said. According to Bruzz, the victim’s family is considering taking legal action against Colruyt.

"At the end of this week (last), we received the regrettable confirmation that a colleague from our Colruyt store in Forest died in his sleep. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and close colleagues. [...]," says the Colruyt spokesperson, thus confirming Mohamed’s death.

"We are currently asking for clarification on the events, of course taking into account the aspect of medical confidentiality. Our priority now is to welcome the employees concerned (who worked with the victim), to inform them clearly and to possibly answer other questions," continues the spokesperson.

In addition, the company assures that it is doing everything possible to create the safest possible framework for its employees. "This means that we strictly comply with the measures taken by the government, such as the provision of gloves, social distancing, etc. We also provide protective masks to employees who wish to use them and we make daily adjustments," explains Silja Decock.
