CIA Website Displays Updated Map of Morocco Including Western Sahara

Just hours before the inauguration of the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, scheduled for this Monday, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is displaying the map of Morocco integrating the territory of the Sahara.

The complete map of Morocco is visible on the CIA website with the description: "Map of Morocco illustrating major population centers, as well as parts of neighboring countries and the North Atlantic Ocean. Since 2020, the United States recognizes the Western Sahara as an integral part of Moroccan territory." A complete fact sheet is now dedicated to the kingdom on the CIA website. It details its strategic location, its millennial history, its political and economic system, as well as its cultural and demographic diversity.

The United States had unveiled, for the first time ever, an "official new map" of Morocco integrating the territory of the Sahara during a ceremony held at the U.S. Embassy in Rabat on December 12, 2020, just two days after the decree signed by Donald Trump. This had formalized the U.S. recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara. Since then, several countries such as Israel, Spain and France have followed in the footsteps of the United States. They have not only recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, but they have also adopted the map of Morocco integrating the territory of the Sahara.

With the return of Donald Trump to the White House, the conflict in the Western Sahara that has pitted Morocco against the Polisario Front since the 1970s could see a significant evolution. The new U.S. administration could get involved in the search for a definitive solution.
