Charleroi Alderman Caught Violating COVID-19 Gathering Restrictions, Faces Consequences

While each individual is allowed to receive four designated people in these times of covid-19, Karim Chaibai, one of the aldermen of Charleroi, was photographed at a table with 23 people. He acknowledges the facts, but his college forces him to spend hours on the ground, raising awareness among young people about the measures related to the coronavirus.
"I made a mistake, admits Karim Chaibai to La Dernière Heure. [...] I should not have let my guard down, especially since I have been super careful since the beginning of the lockdown." A photo of the alderman was published on Wednesday, May 20, on Snapchat. In this photo, he is seen around a table with 23 other people on a terrace at a private residence in Fontaine-l’Evêque. With drinks and food.
"It was a private meeting. I was invited by someone and we were supposed to meet three of us at the start. I didn’t know there would be other people. But again, I regret having let my guard down like that," explains Karim Chaibai.
On Friday, the mayor, Paul Magnette, consulted his college who made a decision: Karim Chaibai will have to go to the field, with young people, for the awareness-raising work on the measures related to covid-19 for two hours a day for two weeks.
