Casablanca Faces Financial Crunch as City Struggles with Debt and Low Revenue

The municipality of Casablanca is going through an unprecedented financial crisis, due to persistently low revenues and the weight of administrative expenses.
The president of the Istiqlal party on the Casablanca Municipal Council, Hussein Nasserallah, pointed out that this crisis is likely to worsen in the coming years. According to him, it is justified by the particular financial management adopted by the City Council.
According to Barlamane, this Council is unable to repay the 2 billion DH loan contracted with the World Bank in 2017, to improve the municipal revenue management system in order to attract private investment.
This loan had not been unanimously approved at the time by the council, which considered that the depleted finances of the municipality chaired by the PJD militant, Abdelaziz El Omari, could not allow the city of Casablanca to resort to this luxury with the World Bank.
