Carbon Monoxide Scare at Eid Al-Adha Celebrations in Brussels

While they were barbecuing during the celebration of Eid Al-Adha on Friday, July 31, Belgian Muslims almost suffered carbon monoxide poisoning. Alerted, the Brussels firefighters intervened very quickly.

According to Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the firefighters, three interventions took place on Friday for barbecues. No cases of intoxication were recorded. The first intervention by the Brussels firefighters took place in the Marius Renard district in Anderlecht. It was a smoke release on the front and rear facades of a building. On arrival, the firefighters managed to urgently evacuate 7 children and 3 adults through the stairwell, who were having a barbecue on a small terrace, reports La Dernière Heure. The only problem: all the smoke was going back inside. The firefighters ventilated the apartment after extinguishing the barbecue.

The firefighters went to the Machtens district in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean for the second intervention. It took place in a 7-story building. The barbecue that was taking place in a chimney was coming out through another chimney on a higher floor. Unlike those in the Marius Renard district, these people had evacuated the premises before the arrival of the firefighters. The latter triggered their CO (carbon monoxide) detector and ventilated the premises.

The third intervention took place on the 4th floor in the Anspach district in Brussels.

After these three different interventions, the firefighters’ spokesman, Walter Derieuw, calls on Muslims to be cautious, to celebrate Eid Al-Adha, in small groups at home, while strictly respecting the health restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the virus in the country.
