We can therefore do whatever we want in Paris": residents shocked after the show of Wydad supporters
The images quickly circulated on social media, leaving doubt about their authenticity. They showed an impressive pyrotechnic show near the Eiffel Tower, but without any police intervention, which surprised many internet users. These were the supporters of Wydad de Casablanca.
The facts, confirmed this Sunday by the residents, occurred on Friday evening around 11:30 pm. Hundreds of supporters of Wydad Casablanca, one of the most titled clubs in Morocco, gathered on the banks of the Seine and the Mirabeau and Grenelle bridges (15th arrondissement) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their group, reports Le Parisien. For nearly two minutes, they lit hundreds of smoke bombs and fireworks, forming a rectangle of red light along the river.
Witnesses describe a very organized scene. The participants were distributed every "5 to 6 m along the bank" and the smoke bombs were distributed just before ignition. Once the show was over, the ultras dispersed as quickly as they had come.
An "illegal demonstration" that questions security
Although the event did not cause any damage or violence, a police source reminded Le Parisien that it was a "totally illegal demonstration", as no declaration had been made to the prefecture. An investigation has been opened and entrusted to the Paris territorial security.
The scene divided the residents. Some, like Sandra, "loved the show", finding it "beautiful", while others were worried. "I was scared," testified a neighbor woken up with a start, who thought it was a fire. For Quentin, whose windows overlook the quays, the incident raises questions: "It’s quite worrying that we can organize such an event just steps from the Eiffel Tower, without difficulty. We can therefore do whatever we want in Paris."
Residents also reported having to reassure their pets, panicked by the noise. A witness also deplored the ecological aspect of the operation, claiming that the supporters had "thrown all the smoke bombs into the Seine", probably to erase the traces before a possible intervention.
