Brussels Grand Mosque Remains Closed Amid Moroccan Espionage Concerns

The Grand Mosque of the Cinquantenaire in Brussels will not be able to resume its activities due to suspicions of Moroccan espionage. This is the decision of the justice system, which has issued a negative opinion.
Among the new leaders of this mosque appointed to end the influence of Saudi Arabia, some are suspected of espionage on behalf of Morocco, report De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws.
Since last April, the Executive of Muslims of Belgium is in charge of managing the place of worship, which receives funding from Saudi Arabia. Pending the filing of a recognition file, a provisional management had been put in place.
Most of the authorities concerned, except the Minister of Justice, supported this request. Based on elements from the State Security, Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open Vld) issued a negative opinion. These elements evoke a Moroccan grip that will have taken over the Saudi influence.
Espionage is also mentioned. The State Security designates three collaborators of the mosque, including a leader, as members of the Moroccan intelligence services. This leader is a member of the association supposed to set up a training course for imams.
As a result, the recognition procedure is suspended. The minister urges the Executive of Muslims to thank the persons concerned.
