Brussels Airport Attack Victims Sue Belgian Government and Insurers Over Inadequate Support

The pleadings hearing took place last Monday before the Dutch-speaking court of first instance in Brussels. The victims of the March 22, 2016 attacks who have brought ten lawsuits against the Belgian State were represented by their lawyer.
Victims of the attack carried out at Brussels Airport have initiated nine lawsuits against, among others, the federal government, Brussels Airport Company and its insurer Amlin. At the hearing, lawyer Nic Reynaert, a survivor of the attack carried out at the Maelbeek metro station, represents the victims. He is personally suing the federal government, the STIB and the insurer Ethias.
The plaintiffs and their lawyer deplored the poor reception given to the victims of the two 2016 attacks. According to them, the defendants did not react adequately on the day of the attacks, reports Belga. They also blame them for having concealed crucial medical information and unnecessarily complicated the compensation procedures.
Regarding the steps taken in the context of the attack that occurred at Brussels Airport, Nic Reynaert’s wish is to split the files into two parts. On the one hand, the primary damages (the physical consequences of the attacks for the victims). The insurance company Amlin is the defendant. On the other hand, the secondary damages. These are the mistakes made by the government.
In the trial on the Maalbeek attack, the lawyer asked the government to distribute a brochure explaining the possible neurological and auditory consequences of a bomb attack. He also asked for the publication of the official scale used to assess the percentage of disability. The court’s decision is expected in a month.
