Boston assault Algerian teen escalates to Tebboune presidency

The case has moved beyond social media. It has now reached the Algerian presidency. Abdelmadjid Tebboune responded on Thursday, July 2, to the case of an Algerian-American teenager who was allegedly assaulted in Boston, United States, during the Morocco–Netherlands match, played in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

According to Algerian media TSA, the teenager, aged 14, was wearing an Algeria jersey at the time of the incident. Individuals presented as Moroccan supporters allegedly confronted him in a fan zone in Boston. A video of the scene circulated on social media, causing strong emotion in Algeria.

When questioned by the press after voting in the legislative elections, Abdelmadjid Tebboune indicated that the young boy, named Wassim, lived in Boston and held dual Algerian and American nationality. The Algerian president also assured that the teenager had left the hospital.

A case now being followed by Algiers

The Algerian head of state claims to have been in contact with Sabri Boukadoum, Algeria’s ambassador to Washington, in order to monitor the case’s progress with American authorities. Algiers thus wants to give a consular dimension to a case that emerged on the sidelines of a supporters’ gathering.

The case already goes beyond a simple news item. In a context of permanent rivalry between Morocco and Algeria, the alleged assault quickly took on a political and media dimension. On the Algerian side, several media outlets present the teenager as a victim of collective violence linked to the jersey he was wearing.

Caution remains necessary, however. At this stage, the exact circumstances of the assault, the identity of the alleged perpetrators, and the precise sequence of events still need to be established by American authorities. Diplomatic pressure or national emotion cannot replace an investigation.

The young Wassim reportedly also received an invitation from Algeria’s Sports Minister to attend the Algeria–Switzerland match, scheduled for Friday in Vancouver. A way for Algiers to transform this highly sensitive case into a public message of support for the teenager.
