BNP Paribas is leaving Morocco and selling its subsidiary to Holmarcom
The operation should not be finalized until 2026, but it is already shaping the new banking map of the Kingdom. BNP Paribas is planning to sell its Moroccan subsidiary to strengthen its capital, leaving the field open for its historical partner, the Holmarcom group, to recover the majority of the capital.
The financial impact is already quantified by the European banking giant. If the transaction is completed by 2026, BNP Paribas is counting on an improvement of around 15 basis points in its CET1 solvency ratio. This financial projection motivates the strategic reorganization of the French group, which is about to turn a major page in its history in Morocco by withdrawing from its local subsidiary, according to a press release from the group.
To materialize this withdrawal, the bank has officially opened exclusive discussions with the Holmarcom group. The subject of the negotiations concerns the sale of the 67% stake held by BNP Paribas in the capital of BMCI. Although the exchanges are only at a preliminary stage, the roadmap is drawn to transfer control of the institution.
This choice of buyer is part of a logic of continuity. Holmarcom is not unknown to the bank, as it has been a shareholder and partner of BMCI for thirty years. The French group specifies that it will communicate later if this project were to materialize, in accordance with the regulations in force.
