Ayoub El Kaabi’s Bicycle Kick: Morocco’s Powerful Message to Its Future Opponents
Mission accomplished for the Atlas Lions. The national team won (2-0) against the Comoros this Sunday evening in Rabat, in the opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Thanks to goals from Brahim Díaz and Ayoub El Kaabi, Morocco temporarily takes the lead in Group A.
The start of the tournament was not easy at the Moulay Abdellah sports complex. Despite clear dominance, Walid Regragui’s men initially lacked efficiency. The beginning of the match was marked by a missed penalty by Soufiane Rahimi and the injury-forced substitution of captain Romain Saïss, replaced by Jawad El Yamiq. Facing a compact Comorian block playing on the counter-attack, the score remained 0-0 until halftime.
The liberation came in the second half. In the 55th minute, Brahim Díaz broke the deadlock by opening the scoring, forcing the opponent to open up. The break was brilliantly sealed in the 74th minute: Ayoub El Kaabi doubled the lead with a spectacular bicycle kick, definitively sealing the outcome of the match.
With this first victory, Morocco pockets three points and takes the lead in their group, pending the result of the Mali-Zambia match, which will be played on Monday in Casablanca.
The Atlas Lions will face Mali in their second outing, on Friday, December 26 at 9:00 PM, again in Rabat.
