Belgium under tension facing measles imported from Morocco
Belgium is facing a resurgence of measles with 229 cases reported in 2025. This worrying increase is partly attributed to the importation of the virus from active epidemic hotspots abroad, particularly in Morocco.
The experts gathered at the annual vaccination symposium at the University of Antwerp have established a direct link between the multiplication of infections on Belgian soil and the health situation in certain third countries. Travels of travelers from Morocco and Eastern Europe have contributed to the spread of the virus, taking advantage of insufficient vaccine coverage: nearly 80% of infected people were not protected.

This importation of cases weighs heavily on the national health balance. According to provisional data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Belgium had the second highest rate of contamination in the European Union last November, with 33.3 cases per million inhabitants, mainly affecting a child population.

The phenomenon is part of a global context of declining fight against the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently removed the measles elimination status from six countries, including the United Kingdom and Spain. An alarming trend that is also gaining ground in the United States, where more than 500 cases have already been reported at the beginning of 2026.
