Belgium to Deploy Intelligence Officer in Morocco to Boost Security Cooperation

After declaring their support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, and recently making a visit to Rabat, the Belgian authorities are preparing to strengthen their police cooperation with Morocco.

According to Maghreb Intelligence, Belgium plans to appoint an intelligence officer to Morocco this summer to facilitate the exchange of information on irregular immigration, terrorism and extremism. Thus, this officer from the Civil Intelligence Service (VSSE), the domestic intelligence service of Brussels, who will be based in Morocco, will work in synergy with the Moroccan security services to obtain and transfer sensitive data affecting Belgium.

The appointment of the Belgian liaison officer in Morocco follows the working visit to Rabat from April 14 to 16 of a Belgian delegation led by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. A trip aimed at "strengthening economic, energy, security and migratory relations" with Morocco, he indicated on his X account. "The visit to Morocco is the beginning of something very promising and very beautiful [...] Together, we are strong. I am very optimistic about the future of cooperation between the two countries," he wrote.

"This meeting was an opportunity to sign many cooperation agreements between Morocco and Belgium to establish concrete partnerships," said Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch at the end of the audience granted to his Belgian counterpart. For his part, De Croo reiterated "Belgium’s support for the UN-led process to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution for the parties" to the Sahara conflict.

Morocco and Belgium maintain good military cooperation, based on the cooperation agreement signed in 1992 and the technical agreement dating from 1998. During De Croo’s visit to Rabat, the two parties renewed their "willingness to work to further promote cooperation in order to meet common challenges".
