Belgian Tourist Stabbed in Morocco: Terrorism Investigation Launched

The Belgian justice system has decided to open an investigation, after the attack against a Belgian national in Agadir on January 15. The suspect has already been arrested.
In a press release, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) reported that the suspect had tried last Saturday to physically assault customers of a cafe on the coastal strip in Agadir, including a Belgian national who was taken to the hospital to receive the necessary care. Born in 1955, the latter is from the Mons region and a resident of Morocco. According to Moroccan doctors, this person who was seriously injured is no longer in danger. Before this assault, the same 31-year-old suspect had fatally assaulted a French national in Tiznit, on the same day, before fleeing and being arrested.
These two acts have prompted the Moroccan judicial authorities to open a file for terrorism. For its part, the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office, working closely with the French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT), has also opened a case for attempted murder in a terrorist context. Already, a police liaison officer and a Belgian liaison magistrate are in Morocco for concerted, rapid and effective collaboration with the Moroccan police and judicial authorities. The anti-terrorism section of the Federal Judicial Police of Charleroi is in charge of the investigation file.
