Belgian Terror Suspects on Trial for Violent Home Robbery of Elderly Jeweler

When they appeared before the Nivelles Assize Court on Thursday, January 7, Akim S., a Moroccan resident in Brussels, and the Frenchman Salah G., both suspected of having committed, on April 28, 2017, a violent home-jacking in Braine-l’Alleud, rejected the accusations in block and requested acquittal. These two defendants were sentenced in Brussels to seven and eight years in prison in a case related to terrorism.
The facts had taken place at the victim’s home, a 77-year-old jeweler. Hooded men had assaulted him, beaten him, tied him up with Colson ties and tortured him with electricity, reports La Dernière Heure. The attackers had taken away jewelry worth several hundred thousand euros. Some of this jewelry had been found a few weeks later during searches carried out in Anderlecht in a garage box used by the brothers Akim and Mohamed S. They were also suspected of preparing an attack.
The investigators had also found war weapons and explosives in this box. Adept of a rigorous Islam and very close to the two Moroccan brothers, Salah G. had brought another part of the loot back to France.
The prosecution claims that the loot from the Braine theft was to finance terrorist activities. False, said Salah G. during the hearing. He also denies any involvement in the jeweler’s assault. However, he acknowledges receiving
