Belgian Politician Remains Jailed in Corruption and Money Laundering Probe

Hicham Chakir, a Moroccan-origin municipal councilor of Molenbeek, is being prosecuted in a corruption case, and is being held in custody. The justice will rule on his provisional release in 15 days.
The politician’s name would have appeared in a money laundering file. He was arrested on September 22 at Brussels Airport, suspected of being involved in a case of corruption by a public office holder and money laundering, reports Belga.
While the council chamber ordered his provisional release, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office filed a suspensive appeal against this decision. Hicham Chakir will therefore have to wait for a decision from the indictment chamber, which will in turn consider this request for release. It is scheduled in 15 days, the same source specifies. In the meantime, he will remain in prison.
